Top Corporate Diversity Executive | Certified Professional Coach

Janese Murray

Janese Murray has over 20 years of experience in helping companies develop effective diversity and inclusion strategies. A thought leader in the field, Janese has been quoted in top publications, including the Wall Street Journal and Fortune, and was recognized by Black Enterprise Magazine as one of the Top Executives in Corporate Diversity.  She is also a certified professional coach.

Janese retired from the Exelon Corporation where she served as the Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion.  She led a team in partnering with business leaders, HR teams, and employee resource groups to increase the diversity of the workforce and create an inclusive environment. Under Janese’s leadership, Exelon Corporation increased the diversity of their workforce, engaged white men in the work of driving diversity and inclusion, and was recognized as one of the DiversityInc Top 50 companies for diversity and inclusion two years in a row.

Murray previously served as the executive director of Talent Development and Inclusion for Constellation Energy. In that role, she led a team that was responsible for enterprise-wide talent management, leadership development, and diversity and inclusion programs. During Murray’s career in human resources, she has held roles of increasing responsibility at various companies including CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield and Black and Decker.

Janese sees diversity and inclusion as more than just increasing diversity of the workforce. She sees it as a way to create a culture that retains key talent, unleashes innovation, improves employee engagement, and helps companies broaden their consumer base and advance company goals. She leverages several strengths in her approach to helping diversity practitioners, HR teams and leaders drive this culture change within their organizations.

  • Engagement – Janese believes that it is important to engage leaders in the work of creating an inclusive culture where all employees can grow and thrive.  In many organizations, white men make up the majority of leadership roles but have often been excluded from efforts around diversity and inclusion. Janese partners with the diversity practitioner and HR team to proactively involve all employees, with a special emphasis on white male engagement.

  • Practicality – Janese understands the importance of operationalizing diversity and inclusion to identify concrete actions that the organization can take to move the needle. By utilizing data and metrics, as well as existing systems and processes, Janese assists with identifying gaps and creating strategies to address those gaps.

  • Training and Education – While training and education plays a very small part in driving the change necessary to have an inclusive culture, it sets the foundation and establishes common language and understanding. Janese possesses strong presentation skills and has the ability to use humor, when appropriate, to moderate tough subjects without impacting the learning. She uses effective techniques in small group discussion and employs interactive dialogue to engage participants and deepen the learning.

Murray received a B.A. in Speech Communication from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland and earned her coaching certification in June 2016.
